An email exchange with Reuben got me thinking about biodiesel. I wrote saying:
I am not sure what ‘biodiesel’ is. I am assuming that it is some sort of oil that is extracted from some plant that is grown for the purpose and which oil can be used to fuel a diesel engine.
The good thing about biodiesel (assuming my conjecture is correct) is that it takes care of the carbon dioxide problem. Growing the plant which produces biodiesel would remove an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere as would be produced from using the diesel in an internal combustion engine. Essentially, it would be a ‘solar-powered’ engine with the plant working as the intermediate stage.
Then I figured that I might as well reduce my level of ignorance. So off to the web I went and found Biodiesel.org. Here are some of the basics:
What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. How is biodiesel made?
Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the fat or vegetable oil. The process leaves behind two products — methyl esters (the chemical name for biodiesel) and glycerin (a valuable byproduct usually sold to be used in soaps and other products). Is Biodiesel the same thing as raw vegetable oil?
No! Fuel-grade biodiesel must be produced to strict industry specifications (ASTM D6751) in order to insure proper performance. Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Biodiesel that meets ASTM D6751 and is legally registered with the Environmental Protection Agency is a legal motor fuel for sale and distribution. Raw vegetable oil cannot meet biodiesel fuel specifications, it is not registered with the EPA, and it is not a legal motor fuel.
If India can grow the biomass suitable for biodiesel in marginal agricultural lands, it would be wonderful. Of course, India also needs clean-burning modern diesel engines as well. This can be one of those technologies that create a partnership between the agricultural and manufacturing sectors: the former grows the stuff and provides the latter the induced demand for its output.
NOTE: I don’t have any expertise in biodiesel. So please don’t write a comment asking for information.

Biodiesel seems a very good fit for India for several reasons:
– Indian cities are teeming with diesel rickshaws and in general consumes far more diesel than petrol. I live in the US, most cars run on petrol which limits the potential of biodiesel.
– biodiesel can be produced on small scales, ideal for India’s rural farmers to participate in
– domestic production will keep capital within the country and lower fuel transportation costs

Sub: Purchase of Carbon Emission Credits from Trading Opportunity for your biodiesel project company
Dear Sir/Madam,
Let me introduce myself as, Digvijay Chauhan, Business Development Director at EcoSecurities Group UK.
The Clean Development Mechanism represents a huge opportunity for the BioDiesel and Jatropha/Pongamia Plantation to decrease its margins between the high costs and increase return on investment. By Producing the BioDiesel and replacing the petroleum Diesel, you are reducing the Emissions of Green House Gases and reducing the carbon you are entitled to receive financial benefits under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
We are a UK based company, with over $100 of assets to buy carbon credits, making us the leading buyer of carbon assets in the world. We are also rated as no. 1 carbon advisory firm by Environment Finance for 5 years in a row. EcoSecurities has its operations in more than 14 countries and have offered advisory in projects in over 70 countries worldwide. We work with most of the European Governments including Austria, Netherlands & even Japan and have transacted over 150 projects with 90 million credits. We have been specializing in CDM projects, climate change and the carbon market for over 15 years and are one of the pioneers in this industry.
Realizing the huge potential for Biodiesel CDM projects in India and knowing the tremendous volume of CERs available from Indian Biodiesel projects, we wish to buy the CERs from the existing good projects as well as to provide the financial and technical support to the potential ones. We are selective in our buying process and would assess 20-30 projects and buy from 5-10 of these. We have a deadline to conclude these deals by July 15th. We believe that the projects you have access to should meet our criterion.
We would like to buy the CERs generated from your project. In order to do due diligence we are looking for biodiesel projects that are
– related to Jathropha & Pongamia
– minimum capacity of 5 MT per day
– atleast 1000 hectares
– all production for domestic consumption (not for exports)
In order to do the due diligence we need information about
– your financial closure
– your start date
– commissioning dates
– The Raw Materials
– The end Use of the BioDiesel
Image 1: Flowchart of biodiesel process. Red font indicates CER possibilities while blue font indicates possible additional revenue source.
This offer is relevant only up to the above deadline. In select cases we might even consider reimbursing the validation and PDD development costs. Thus, please let us know if you are interested to proceed with us in this matter and do take advantage of transacting directly with a buyer and avoiding the transaction costs of dealing with brokers. As soon as you display interest we will appoint a representative from our side to do the necessary due diligence and make a firm and final offer.
In addition, please also let us know if you are currently planning/ undertaking any new CDM projects in your company so that we can explore some opportunity to long term partner with your esteemed company.
Assuring you the best deal in the carbon market,
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Thank you

INVITATION TO BID(I AM EXPECTING YOUR RESPONSE)
I am Senator Abdul Mamman, a member of the National Assembly,
representing Kaduna
State Senatorial constituency of Federal republic of Nigeria. I write
to solicit
your interest in a project that will be beneficial to you and I.
PROJECT INTRODUCTION
Several committees have been created within the senate to deliberate on
major
capital projects. One of these committees is the Contract Advisory
committee
(CAC), which I am the Chairman.
The projects have been categorized under the following sectors:
Agriculture,
Mines and Power, Education, Housing, Health, Petroleum, Information
Technology
and Communication, Aviation e.t.c.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has received a credit of US$2.6
Billion from
the International Development Association (IDA) in various Currencies
towards the
funding of the above projects.
HOW TO FIT IN
Projects above US$15Million have been tagged for Foreign Contractors
only, who
will be invited to bid for contracts by open tender. To participate in
the bid,
we shall need to present your Company as our foreign partner with a
local
subsidiary in Nigeria.
You shall then put forward an application to bid for a major capital
project/contract on our behalf in an area of your speciality, although
we already
have some projects in mind to bid for with your support.
MY DUTY
My duty will be that of the lobbyist. I shall guide the process of the
contract
bid to ensure that the contract is awarded to your company for us all.
All the
necessary documentation involved with the contract award will be done
at my end
to meet the stipulated requirements of the committee.
WHAT WE STAND TO GAIN
Once the contract is awarded to your Company and this is approved, by
our senate
committee, 80% of the total contract value, shall be advanced to your
company as
mobilization/facilitation allowance to allow you commence the execution
of the
contract and the balance 20% shall be paid upon completion of the
contract.
At this time, it is worthy to note that most major foreign contracts in
Nigeria
have a 30% net profit margin and the Contract we intend to bid for with
your
support is valued at about USD$50MILLION, so we all stand to make
USD$15million
as profit upon completion of the contract. For your assistance, we are
willing to
compensate you with 20% of the profit and the remainder 80% shall be
ours.
In as much as we would want you to take time to ponder on our proposal
to you,
Kindly indicate your interest as soon as possible via a return email,
then I will
be more comfortable to give you further details. The issue of
confidentiality and
utmost secrecy forms the bedrock of the success of this project.
Kindly endeavour to keep this transaction to your good self-alone as we
shall not
welcome any form of intrusion.
While we expect your immediate response, I remain,
Senator Abdul Mamman (OFR.CON.)

We are producing high quality Jatropha seeds and saplings for plantation purposes. The rates for these seeds & Saplings will be $1.00 per kg of seeds or 15 Nos. of saplings, Ex-New Delhi, India and are available ex-stock with us. With these seeds we will also provide a detailed procedure for carrying out the plantation process and the maintenance required, in the coming years, for maximum production of seeds. We will also suggest the pesticides, fertilizers and hormone spray to be used to increase production. We will also provide the know-how for production of compost, most suitable for these plants, from organic material available in farms and at zero cost to the farmer. All the procedures are formulated by carrying out trials on the plantations grown using these seeds.

So we have great touch with local farmers, but the problem is that we dont know from where to start, how to start? where is the market?? I know it has good market but…
So we want assistance to develop this project here.
